Genie integration in Dashboards fails with "GenericChatCompletionServiceException" (Free Edition)

I am experiencing a persistent error when using Genie Space integration within a Databricks Dashboard (v3/Lakeview). While Genie works perfectly as a standalone Space, it consistently fails when invoked via the Dashboard sidebar.

Environment:

Edition: Databricks Free Edition
Warehouse: Serverless Starter Warehouse (Status: Running)
Data: Unity Catalog tables (main.schema.table format)

The Issue:

In the Genie Space UI, natural language queries (e.g., "show 5 rows") work fine and generate SQL/results successfully.
In the Dashboard sidebar (Ask Genie), the exact same queries fail immediately.
The error message shown is: Details: Agentic SQL generation failed: GenericChatCompletionServiceException: Chat completion failed

What I have tried so far:

Permissions: Set Genie Space sharing to "All workspace users" with "Can Manage" permissions.
Linking: Tried linking the Genie Space using both the full URL and the specific 32-character Space ID.
Isolation: Tested in Incognito/Secret mode to rule out browser cache issues.
Data Re-indexing: Removed and re-added all tables in the Genie Space and ensured they are fully indexed.
Dashboard Settings: Published the dashboard with "Share data permission (default)" and tried various Locale settings (Japanese and English).
Warehouse Check: Verified the Serverless Warehouse is fully "Running" and "Connected" before querying.

Despite these efforts, the sidebar remains non-functional while the standalone Genie Space works.

Has anyone encountered this specific GenericChatCompletionServiceException only within the Dashboard context? Is this a known limitation of the Free Edition, or is there a specific session/authentication configuration I might be missing?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I believe the problem you're experiencing here is due to limitations around the context window size. The endpoints have maximum context windows and when you send the instruction to the genie room from a dashboard then it appends additional instructions which must be maxing out the context window size. To troubleshoot you could try removing some tables from your genie space and minimizing any user instructions.

Thanks for your suggestion but I've tried just one table with simple question like 'show 5 rows' already and got the same error...

It may be because of catalog permission.
Once I've granted `SELECT` permission to all users on my source tables which are used on the dashboard, now I see Genie's response.

Yes 100%, any user would need to have select permissions on the table that the Genie Space is created on top of.
