Delete Users that are Maintenance Readers

I am an Account Admin at Databricks (Azure), and trying to delete users that are being offboarded.

I have managed to delete most users. However, for a couple, I get the following message (see screenshot):

ABORTED: Account <account> is read-only during maintenance and cannot be updated

Does anyone know how to proceed with the deletion of these users? And, to replace them as "read-only during maintenance"?

When trying to delete users in Databricks (Azure) and encountering the message "ABORTED: Account <account> is read-only during maintenance and cannot be updated," this means that your Databricks account is currently in a maintenance mode where no changes can be made to user accounts, resources, or settings. During this temporary period, all update and delete operations are blocked by the platform for account safety and consistency.

Why This Happens

Databricks periodically places accounts into a read-only state during platform or backend maintenance. This can happen for system upgrades, data migrations, or critical fixes.
While in this state, all changes—including user deletion—are not allowed until maintenance completes.

What To Do

Wait for maintenance to finish. Once your account returns to normal status, you will be able to delete users as usual from the admin console.
There is no workaround or override to delete users during maintenance; system write-access is strictly enforced for all users—including account admins.
If you wish to know when maintenance will end, check your Azure Databricks Service Health status in the Azure Portal, or contact Microsoft/Azure support for updates if the maintenance period is prolonged.

Replacing "Read-Only During Maintenance" Status

This status cannot be changed or bypassed by account admins; it is controlled by Databricks/Microsoft for backend stability.
When maintenance is finished, the status will clear automatically, and administrative functions will be restored.

Additional Notes

If you urgently need changes, you may open a support case with Databricks or Azure, but they generally cannot expedite the end of maintenance for managed accounts.
For long-running or repeated maintenance blocks, ensure you are checking release notes or Azure Status messages for planned outages so you can schedule offboarding outside these windows.
