Issue with View Ownership Reassignment in Unity Catalog

Hello,

It appears that the ownership rules for views and functions in Unity Catalog do not align with the guidelines provided in the “Manage Unity Catalog object ownership” documentation on Microsoft Learn.

When attempting to reassign the ownership of a view using the catalog owner, I encounter the following error: “Non-admin user can only transfer ownerships for views to groups the owner is a member of.”

I don’t understand the logic behind why ownership for views can only be transferred 1) exclusively to groups and 2) only to groups that the user is a member of.

As the catalog owner, I would like to be able to transfer the ownership of a view from one user to another user.

Could you please provide guidance on how to resolve this issue?

Hi @Filippo To prevent privilege escalations, only a metastore admin can transfer ownership of a view, function, or model to any user, service principal, or group in the account. Current owners and users with the MANAGE privilege are restricted to transferring ownership to their username or to a group that they are member of.
