You are experiencing an authentication issue when trying to use a custom Docker image from Azure Container Registry (ACR) with Databricks clusters, despite successfully using admin tokens and service principals with acrpull permissions in other contexts like local CLI login. This is a common pain point due to specific requirements in Databricks for accessing private Docker registries like ACR.

Issue pulling Docker Image on Databricks Cluster through Azure Container Registry

Hi Community.

Essentially, we're using the ACR to push our custom Docker Image, then we would like to pull it to create a Databricks cluster. However, during the cluster creation, we got the following error:

I'm convinced we tried to authenticate in all the possible ways, however none of them worked. For example, I've created an ACR Token with the "admin" scope and I'm able to login locally through the Docker CLI, but not using the Databricks Cluster Configuration.

Of course, we've also followed the documentation (like Azure Container Registry authentication with service principals or Azure Container Registry Entra permissions and role assignments overview ), but unfortunately we were unlucky and the issue still persists.
Briefly, we tried to use a Service Principal with the "acrpull" permission and still we can't authenticate during the cluster creation, neither locally with the `docker login` command.

We followed the instruction of this post and this is the result we got:

I hope this information is enough. Please, let me know if you need more context.

Thank you. Regards.

Typical Causes and Checks

Service Principal Permissions: Make sure your service principal has the
acrpull
role at the scope of the ACR registry, and not only at a more limited resource group or subscription level.

Authentication Methods:

Databricks typically only supports username/password authentication for accessing Docker registries, not using Docker CLI tokens or ACR access keys directly.
