Hi ,

I have created Dashboard on Databricks using sql datasets and published with " Shared Data Permission " with the business user . he can see the data and charts but unable to use "Ask Genie " functionality . Do I need to grant Use Catalog , schema permissions . But I think, Shared data permission need not require it . What can be the reason and what is the way forward so the business user can use the Ask Genie embedded automatically within Databricks Dashboard

You are correct that Shared data permission should not require the business user to have direct USE CATALOG, USE SCHEMA, or SELECT permissions on the underlying data. With embedded/shared credentials, the autogenerated Genie Agent should use the dashboard publisher’s credentials.

Please check the following in the order below

The dashboard must be published, not viewed as a draft. Draft dashboards use the viewer’s credentials.
Genie must be enabled in the dashboard settings: Dashboard → Settings → General → Enable Genie. This is enabled by default, but should be confirmed.
The user must be a workspace member to interact with the dashboard’s Genie Agent. Account-level access alone may allow dashboard viewing but may not be sufficient for Genie interaction.
Confirm that the user is accessing the dashboard in Databricks or through Basic Embedding. Ask Genie is not supported with external embedding. For external embedding, use the Genie Conversation API instead.
Check whether the dashboard datasets use OpenSharing/Delta Sharing. These datasets are not supported by Genie Agents using embedded credentials. In that case, either use viewer credentials with the required data permissions or redesign the data access pattern.
Review the dashboard SQL for unsupported expressions such as dynamic IDENTIFIER(), temporary views/functions, or direct volume references. Genie may ignore those datasets.
