Free Practice Exam for Databricks Data Engineer Associate — 45 Questions, 7 Domains, Detailed

Hi everyone,

The most common question we see in this community every week is some version of "How do I know if I am ready for the exam before spending $200?"

We built a free practice exam to answer that question.

What it includes

45 scenario-based questions matching the format and difficulty of the real exam. Not definition questions. Real scenarios where you read a situation and choose the best approach.

All 7 domains from the 2026 exam syllabus are covered: Lakehouse Platform, ELT with Spark SQL and Python, Incremental Data Processing, Production Pipelines, Data Governance, Delta Lake Management, and Auto Loader Ingestion.

Every question has a detailed explanation — not just the correct answer but why each incorrect option is wrong.

70 percent passing threshold. Same as the real exam for your practice.

No signup. No paywall.

What the results are telling us

Thousands of engineers have taken it so far. The patterns are consistent.

Where most people struggle:

Auto Loader scenarios. Not the concept but the decision-making. Directory listing versus file notification. Schema evolution with mergeSchema versus rescue columns. When COPY INTO is actually the better choice. This topic alone can be 6-7 questions on the real exam.

Lakeflow expectations. Knowing that expect exists is not enough. The exam gives you a scenario like "bad records should be logged but never dropped" and you pick between expect, expect_or_drop, and expect_or_fail. Three decorators, three behaviors, no room for guessing.

Unity Catalog permissions. Everyone knows catalog.schema.table. The hard part is GRANT scenarios. Who gets read access. Who can create tables. Who cannot. These require thinking about governance, not recalling a naming pattern.

Where most people do well:

Delta Lake fundamentals, basic SQL and DataFrame operations, and platform navigation.

The takeaway: If you score well on Delta Lake but struggle with Auto Loader and Lakeflow, you do not need to study more overall. You need to go deeper on those specific domains. That targeted approach saves weeks.

How to use it

Take it cold first, without any preparation. Get an honest baseline. Read every explanation, even for questions you got right. Identify your weak domains. Study those specifically. Retake. If you are consistently above 80 percent with solid reasoning, you are ready.

If you are below 70 percent, you just saved yourself $200 and you know exactly what to study next.

Links (all free)

Practice Exam: bricksnotes.com/practice/databricks-data-engineer-associate

Certification Study Guide: bricksnotes.com/databricks-certification-guide

Blog (deep dives on Auto Loader, Delta Lake, Lakeflow): bricksnotes.com/blog

If you take the practice exam and have feedback, we would love to hear it. We built this for this community and your input helps us make it better.

Good luck to everyone preparing.
