Data Scientist Seeking Advice: How to transition to a role in LLM/AI?

Hi Community! ๐Ÿ‘‹

My name is Chris and I'm a Data Scientist with 3+ years of experience in the Ads measurement space. I am undergoing a career transition right now, and I'm actively seeking for a next role in data. I am really interested in LLM/AI and want to eventually land a job in the AI space, whether as an AI engineer or a Data Scientist working closely with AI product. I have been watching LLM videos to learn on my own but still lack professional training and project based experiences to get enough attention from the AI recruiting space. I'm wondering if anyone have any general tips/advice or share your experiences on how you made the career transition! Anything is greatly appreciated โค๏ธ

Hi @chrislu0201, Welcome to the community! Itโ€™s fantastic that youโ€™re transitioning into the AI/LLM space.

  1. Enroll in online courses or certifications. Look for courses in AI, machine learning, and LLM (Large Language Models).
  2. To stay updated with the latest advancements, read foundational books like โ€œDeep Learningโ€ by Ian Goodfellow and research papers from conferences like NeurIPS, ICML, and ACL.
  3. Start with small projects and gradually take on more complex ones. Create a GitHub repository to showcase your work. You can find project ideas on Kaggle or try replicating models from recent AI papers.
  4. Participate in AI competitions on platforms like Kaggle to gain practical experience and showcase your skills.
  5. Connect with professionals in the AI/LLM space. Share your projects and insights to build your brand.
  6. Join AI and data science communities on Slack, Discord, or Reddit. Attend local meetups and conferences to network and learn from others.

Good luck with your career transition, Chris!
