Built a chrome extension that shows live $/hr inside the databricks UI

Got annoyed by not being able to see real-time costs in Databricks whilst manipulating data pipelines. Built a Chrome extension sitting in the corner of the page, pulls cluster and warehouse state from the API every few seconds, multiplies by DBU rates to show you a live $/hr estimate. Next, I want to add idle alerts when clusters have been sitting idle for 30 min.

Couple questions before I go deeper:

  1. Would you install this or is just "live cost" not enough?

  2. What would push it from neat to part of your daily workflow?

  3. Anyone using something similar I should look at first?

happy to open-source it once there is clear interest.

Yes, I’d install it — live cost is compelling — but it becomes daily-use only once it nudges behavior, not just informs.
Live cost alone

Valuable during notebook work, tuning, and experimentation
Helps build immediate cost intuition
Feels “nice to have” vs “must have”

What makes it sticky

Idle alerts after 20–30 min (biggest win)
Clear “you’re burning $$ right now” messaging
One‑click context: what’s costing money and why
Session cost: “this debug run cost $X”
Cost deltas when resizing clusters / warehouses
Quiet, non‑spammy alerts (trust matters)
