Databricks has announced general availability for ABAC row filtering and column masking, governed tags, and data classification in Unity Catalog, bringing policy, tagging, and sensitive-data discovery into one governance framework for protecting data at scale.
Whatโs new
- Define access rules once: ABAC uses governed tags to apply row filters and column masks dynamically, so one policy can protect many matching tables across a catalog or schema instead of being configured table by table.
- Standardize tags across the account: Governed tags create a controlled, account-level tagging system with allowed values and permissions, helping teams keep classification and metadata consistent across workspaces.
- Automatically detect sensitive data: Data Classification uses an AI agent to classify and tag sensitive data in Unity Catalog, helping teams discover PII and other regulated data without relying on manual review.
- Support compliance with less overhead: Supported classification tags cover common frameworks and data types, including PII, GDPR, HIPAA, GLBA, and DPDPA, so governance teams can build broader protection with less manual work.
