How Databricks Helped Me See Data Engineering Differently

Over the years working as a data engineer, Iโ€™ve started to see my role very differently. In the beginning, most of my focus was on building pipelinesโ€”extracting, transforming, and loading data so it could land in the right place. Pipelines were the goal. If the job ran successfully, I felt the work was done.

But with time, and especially while working on Databricks, Iโ€™ve realized that pipelines alone donโ€™t deliver business value. A pipeline moves data, but it doesnโ€™t always answer the question: Can the business actually use this data with trust and confidence? Thatโ€™s when I started thinking about data as a product.

For me, a data product is something more complete. Itโ€™s not just a table or a jobโ€”itโ€™s a trusted dataset or solution that comes with lineage, ownership, quality checks, and governance. Itโ€™s designed so business teams donโ€™t have to question it. They can rely on it for dashboards, decisions, and even AI models.

Databricks has made this mindset shift much easier. With Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, and automation, I can design pipelines that evolve into true products. Metadata, governance, and transparency are built-in. Instead of only moving data, I now focus on enabling outcomesโ€”helping data serve as a real driver of value.

This shift has also changed how I see my role. I donโ€™t think of myself just as a pipeline builder anymore. I see myself as a creator of data products that shape how the business operates and innovates.

Iโ€™m curious to know from others here: How are you thinking about data as a product in your Databricks journey?

@Brahmareddy thanks for this! ๐Ÿ‘.

Think you've nailed it on the head there. If the stakeholders trust the data and there's integrity, governance, and a single source of truth, you've got a recipe for a great product!

Love this take @Brahmareddy ๐Ÿ˜Ž. Really hones in on why we build the pipelines and work with data in the first place.

All the best,
BS
