A Small Thing I Keep Noticing in Data Projects
Lately, I have been thinking about something I have seen again and again in big data projects.
At the start, everything feels manageable. One tool is used for ingestion. Another one is used for transformations. Then one more tool gets added for orchestration. Later, something else is introduced for governance, and another layer comes in for reporting or business use.
Each choice looks reasonable at that moment.
But slowly, the platform starts becoming heavier.
I have seen this happen in many projects. The team is not only building pipelines anymore. They are also spending a lot of time managing the connections between tools. A small issue can take longer to debug because the problem may sit between systems, not inside one system.
The work is moving forward.
But it does not always feel smooth.
That is why a recent Databricks update caught my attention. Databricks recently shared more about running dbt on Databricks as part of a more unified platform. In that post, Databricks talks about built-in governance, strong price performance, and a simpler way to keep pipelines, data, and platform operations closer together instead of spreading work across too many disconnected layers.
What I liked most was not only the dbt topic itself.
It was the bigger idea behind it.
In many teams, the real complexity does not come only from business logic. It comes from the number of tools people have to keep aligned. Every extra layer may solve one problem, but it can also create a new one. Over time, engineers start spending more energy on managing tool boundaries than improving the actual data product.
I have personally felt that this is where modern platforms need to do better.
A strong platform should not only be powerful. It should also make day-to-day work feel lighter. When ingestion, transformation, governance, and orchestration stay closer together, teams can focus more on what really matters. That means better data quality, better logic, and more confidence in what gets delivered.
Databricks is clearly pushing that message. In its April 16, 2026 post, the company describes dbt on Databricks as part of an open, unified lakehouse approach with built-in governance and strong price performance.
This does not mean every team should force everything into one place.
But it does make me think about one simple question.
Are we building platforms that help engineers move faster, or are we building platforms that quietly make them manage too many moving parts?
That question feels very real to me.
My takeaway is simple. Good data platforms should reduce unnecessary weight. They should help teams spend less time managing the space between tools and more time creating real value.
That is one reason this Databricks direction stood out to me.
