Attending the Data + AI Summit 2025 in San Francisco in person for the first time was an exceptional experience. As a Databricks MVP, author, instructor, and data engineer with over a decade of experience in data and AI, Summit provided a unique convergence of technical innovation, hands-on training, and community engagement that exceeded my expectations.
I’ll share my insights and reflections and explain why I believe the Data + AI Summit is a must-attend for any data professional.
Presenting at the Summit: Sharing Knowledge Globally
One of the most defining moments of the Summit for me was presenting my session, "A Practical Roadmap to Becoming an Expert Databricks Data Engineer." The session focused on providing a structured and practical approach to mastering the Databricks ecosystem from a data engineer’s perspective. Rather than delivering abstract theory, I concentrated on offering real-world insights drawn from my own experiences in enterprise environments. Attendees gained:
Speaking to an audience of data enthusiasts and aspiring data engineers was both humbling and inspiring. Observing their keen engagement through thoughtful questions and meaningful interactions afterward was truly motivating.
For those who were unable to attend the session, the recording is now available through the Summit’s official website.
Signing My O'Reilly Book: Meeting the Readers
One of the most rewarding moments of this journey was signing copies of my O’Reilly book, Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate Study Guide, and meeting readers in person. Many shared how it helped them pass certification exams, prepare for interviews, or transition into new data roles. Hearing their success stories was both humbling and energizing, reaffirming the mission that drove me to write it: empowering aspiring data engineers with a reliable, hands-on resource for real career growth.
The idea took shape from a simple observation: certifications open doors only if candidates feel equipped to pursue them. Too often, talented practitioners hesitate—not from lack of skill but from uncertainty about how to prepare effectively. I saw a gap for a structured, end-to-end guide bridging knowledge acquisition and real-world opportunity. This book became that roadmap, not just to passing the Databricks Certified Data Engineer exam but to building lasting skills and confidence, especially as Databricks expertise grows in demand.
Meeting readers who turned that vision into tangible career wins was truly inspiring. It reinforced my commitment to creating accessible, practical materials for the data community and fueled my drive to keep producing content that meets practitioners where they are and helps them reach their next milestone.
Exciting Announcements: Free Edition and Lakeflow Designer
One of the most exciting parts of attending the Data + AI Summit was witnessing the major announcements that will shape the future of data and AI fields. As an instructor and data engineer, I was especially excited this year about these:
Wearing the Certified Jacket: A Badge of Honor
While the keynotes and technical sessions were clearly impressive, the training and certification opportunities were equally impactful. For many attendees, this conference was a chance to level up their skills in real time. Databricks offered a range of instructor-led workshops, hands-on labs, and onsite certification programs throughout the week. And of course, successfully passing a new certification at Summit added a satisfying ending to the week’s achievements.
I was proud to receive my Databricks Certified jacket, complete with badges representing the certifications I’ve earned. This simple yet symbolic gesture recognized the hard work required to attain these credentials. It was also wonderful to see others proudly wearing their certified jackets and engaging in discussions about their learning journeys.
Final Reflections: Networking and Community
Perhaps the most enriching part of the Summit was connecting with fellow data professionals from around the world. From casual hallway conversations to formal networking sessions, the exchange of ideas and experiences offered new perspectives and often led to ongoing collaborations.
The Data + AI Summit 2025 was more than just a conference; it was a celebration of innovation, a platform for learning, and a space for meaningful connection. Whether you're just beginning your data journey or looking to take your expertise to the next level, this event is a must.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to present, connect, and grow, and I’m already looking forward to what next year’s Summit will bring.
