Hi Databricks Community,

Is there a way for Databricks partners to obtain access to an Account Console environment for demonstrating workspace management capabilities to clients?

We are looking for a sandbox, free-tier environment, or any partner lab setup that would allow us to:

• Build internal capability and hands-on expertise
• Develop and demonstrate proof-of-concepts (POCs)
• Showcase workspace administration and governance features to prospective clients
• Support Data Warehouse Modernization discussions and help convert leads into opportunities

Any guidance, partner programs, or available demo environments would be greatly appreciated.

Great question, and one that comes up a lot with partners. The short answer is that there isn't a free, self-service Account Console sandbox today, but you can get to the same outcome a couple of ways. The right path depends on which items in your list you're trying to cover.

First, let's rule out the tempting option. Databricks Free Edition won't work for the account administration piece. It's serverless only, limited to one workspace and one metastore per account, and it has no access to the Account Console or account-level APIs. It's still a fine environment for building hands-on skills and lightweight POCs (your first two bullets), just not for demonstrating workspace creation or account-level governance. And don't count on upgrading a Free Edition account to unlock the Account Console; the full platform requires a separate account created through a trial or paid plan.

The reason for the hard line is that workspace creation and account-wide administration require an account admin context. Account admins create and manage workspaces, identities, and settings across the whole account, while workspace admins manage a single workspace. Free Edition never gives you that account admin surface.

For a real Account Console, you have two practical options:

1. Spin up a 14-day free trial in your own cloud account. This gives you a full Databricks account with the Account Console, where you can create workspaces, assign users, and walk through account-level governance live, which is exactly the workspace management story you described. On AWS you can sign up through the AWS Marketplace, and on Azure you create a workspace from the Azure portal on the Trial (Premium, 14-Days Free DBUs) tier. One Azure gotcha: the first account admin must be a Microsoft Entra ID Global Administrator at the time they first log in to the Account Console. Also keep in mind the trial credits cover Databricks DBUs, but the underlying cloud infrastructure (VMs, storage, networking) still bills to your cloud account.

2. Request a partner sandbox or demo environment. Since you're a registered Databricks Partner, the partner program lists dedicated test and demo environments, sandbox access, and demo credits among its benefits, with availability depending on your program track and tier. Log in to the Databricks Partner Portal (https://partners.databricks.com) and raise it with your Partner Development Manager or partner contact, and ask whether a time-bound demo environment or demo credits can be provisioned if a standing sandbox isn't available. Once you have an environment up, take a gander at dbdemos (dbdemos.ai). It's maintained by Databricks and installs full end-to-end demos into a workspace, which pairs nicely with your POC and Data Warehouse Modernization conversations.

Bottom line: use a 14-day trial in your own cloud account when you need to show the Account Console live and cheaply, use the Partner Portal and your partner contact for a longer-lived sandbox and demo credits, and save Free Edition for single-workspace, non-commercial practice.
