The shift from classic compute to Serverless in Databricks is a game-changer, but the migration process requires a solid strategy. After diving deep into serverless conversions recently, Iโve put together a guided playbook.
Here are my top 5 takeaways for a smooth transition:
- Audit & Standardize First Before moving anything, identify the standard patterns your company follows across notebooks, Python scripts, and SQL files. You need a clear baseline of your current architecture.
- Bake Standards into a Databricks SKILL Take those identified standards and encode them into a custom Databricks SKILL. This turns your organizational knowledge into a reusable, automated asset for the migration.
- Navigating the spark.conf.set Limitation Serverless doesn't support most spark.conf.set configurations (even custom ones). The Workaround: Pass configurations via widgets as an environment Python wheel stored in a Unity Catalog Volume, sharing it across teams. Alternatively, create a common environment notebook and inject it at the top of your jobs using %run.
- Democratize the Conversion Once your SKILL is set up, share it across your data teams! They can use the SKILL and the standardized notebooks to independently check compatibility, convert their workloads, and test their jobs on Serverless compute.
- Iterative Bulk Testing over "Big Bang" Don't try to convert everything at once. The best approach is domain-driven bulk testing. Take one repository or one specific data process, run the conversion, test the serverless execution thoroughly, and then scale the pattern.
Iโve compiled these steps and architectural diagrams into a full Playbook (attached below!).
