Hi everyone
Genie One has been getting a lot of attention since DAIS, and most of the discussion is about what business users can do with it. I want to focus on the other side: what data teams need in place so it gives trustworthy answers.
Quick recap: what is Genie One?
Genie One is the simplified Databricks UI for business users. It's one place to view AI/BI dashboards, ask questions in natural language, and run Databricks Apps, without dealing with compute, queries, or notebooks. If it sounds familiar, that's because Genie One was previously known as Databricks One. What's new is the agentic layer: it's positioned as an AI coworker that can automate and orchestrate work across structured and unstructured data, inside or outside Databricks.
The foundations
1. Unity Catalog is the permission model. Every answer is grounded in your organization's data and governed through Unity Catalog. If your grants are messy, Genie One will faithfully reproduce that mess. Clean up access before you open the door.
2. Genie Agents are where your team adds value. Genie Agents are domain-specific environments where data teams configure the trusted data, metrics, and business rules that power Genie One answers. Start with one or two well-scoped domains (e.g. Sales, Finance) rather than exposing the whole lakehouse.
3. Business context matters as much as the schema. Genie One runs on Genie Ontology, a live context layer that continuously learns your business from internal and external data, AI tools, and workplace apps. It works best when your table and column descriptions, tags, and metric definitions are already good. "rev_adj_2" won't mean anything to anyone, human or AI.
4. Decide workspace-level vs. account-level early. Workspace-level Genie One is scoped to one workspace and its members. Account-level Genie One is an account-wide discovery surface for dashboards, Genie Agents, and apps the user has access to. Also note that with account-level Genie One, Databricks-generated metadata might be processed in the US, which is worth flagging to your compliance team, especially for those of us in the EU.
My suggested rollout order
Clean up Unity Catalog grants โ document key tables and metrics โ build one Genie Agent for a single team โ pilot with a few business users โ review wrong answers weekly and fix the context, not just the prompt.
Over to you
Has anyone moved from classic Genie spaces to Genie Agents yet? What surprised you most about answer quality once real business users started asking questions?
