It is our understanding that enabling unity catalog means that some metadata (for example usernames) will be sent to the USA for processing/storage. This is unfortunately a deal-breaker for us, and we need the data to reside solely in Europe for compliance reasons. Is there any plans for Unity-catalog-in-Europe?

Thanks for the reply @Sivaprasad C Sโ ! Is it possible to get a bit more information? Like, is it even planned to have unity in Europe at *some* point in time, or is it set up to always be US-only?

Usernames have always been stored centrally in the US. That's similar to most global services for the IAM Layer. The only thing additional that gets stored in the US as part of UC is the metastore names. you can check this link ( https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/global-infrastructure/data-residency/)
Azure Databricks which stores identity data and certain tables names and object path information in the US.
Identity Data -> user & group names
Table names -> UC metastore names
Object path information -> Workspace ids

Is it still the case in 2026 with the announcement of the Automatic Identity Management ?

This blog talks about avoiding SCIM sync, but not data residency! Hence, metastore, user names are still stored at US Central!
Actually, this is unfortunate for us too! We are also looking for 100% data rescidency at Europe!!!
