How to let Business Users edit tables in Databricks

Hi Community!

I have the requirement that business users shall be able to edit/update tables in Unity Catalog, e.g. master data records, mapping tables. I also want thes actions to be logged for auditing/troubleshooting.

Is there any simple solution to do this in Databricks that fits for non-technical people?

We do have a few partners that offer solutions in this space (e.g. Retool).  Recently, Sigma added support for their InputTable feature which was designed for this use case: https://www.sigmacomputing.com/blog/bring-your-own-data-to-databricks-with-sigma-input-tables

My own ideas:

- share a notebook with business users to update tables (risky)

- create a low-code app with write permission via sql endpoint

- file-based interface for table changes (ugly)

Any other ideas on existing market solutions for this would be really appreciated.

Are there any plans to offer this as a feature from within Databricks without a third party tool?

Currently Databricks has Lakehouse Apps in private preview, where you can build low-/no-code apps upon your data directly in Databricks: https://www.databricks.com/company/newsroom/press-releases/databricks-announces-lakehouse-apps-and-e...
I don't know if databricks will offers its own app builder, but you can use and administrate tools like Retool or Gradio directly inside of databricks.

I hope that helps.
