Hello
After creating an Databricks Workspace in Azure with No Public IP and VNET Injection, I'm unable to use DBSQL Serverless because the option to enable it in SQL warehouse Settings is missing.
Is it by design? Is it a limitation when using Private Azure Databricks Workspace?
I haven't found a requirement in the Microsoft docs about that.
If it's a limitation, the docs need to be updated.
Thank you.

Hi @karthik p
It's been provisioned in East Us 2.
Sql Serverless is enabled in this region. I tried to create a new workspace with Public IP and the Sql Serverless Option was available. It seems to be something with No Public IP workspaces.

@GREGORY MIGUEL
It looks like it is a limitation. My workspaces with no public IP doesn't seem to have serverless option.

After talking to Databricks Engineers, it's a limitation of the public preview version in workspaces with No Public IP. But the feature is in the product roadmap.
We need to wait for the GA version.

Hi @Vidula Khanna
Yes, after checking out with Databricks team I understand it's a limitation of the public preview version.

Well, now we have the GA version, but this still seems to be a requirement if I am not mistaken? This way, I'm unfortunately not able to use SQL Warehouses at this point since SQL queries vary a lot and we don't want to keep running a SQL Warehouse instance the whole time.
Is is on the roadmap to make this possible? Is this even technically possible? I saw a similar limitation for Serverless on AWS.

I am starting up with databricks and having the same issue. This is very unexpected, since SQL Serverless is advertised so heavily. I have only seen it noted in one place thus far that restricted networking can preclude you from using this.
Please let us know if this is a technical limitation and will never be supported.

Hi,
the Unity Catalog features are very slow without the SQL Warehouse Serverless option. I have to wait 15 minutes for the Classic/Pro cluster to start e.g if I want to grant permissions to objects in unity catalog. Databricks, please address this issue and restore the Serverless option.

Fixed, go to Profile -> Compute-> SQL Server Serverless -> On -> Save. For some reason this has been disabled for us.
