Requesting for assistance in creating a user group for my region

Hello wonderful people . I am currently in the process of applying to create a Databricks user group for my region and would like some assistance in the process. It might will be first in my country and I am optimistic but a bit nervous 😅

Below are some questions I would love some guidance on
1.What next after applying (what is the process going to be like when I have been personally contacted by the databricks user groups team)?
2.Am I required to already have members to begin with ?
3.How long can the process of application to getting officiated as a group take(Is there a regular timeline or it depends on the working speed the community team and databricks) ?

4.Can I start connecting with people and have a few meetups(Online mostly) before being an officiated group  by the community team at databricks ?

5. Is it compulsory for me to have a co-organiser / co-founder for my region's databricks user group  when making the application ?

I am out of questions for now but I will be asking them as they come to mind. I am not quite sure if this question / concern aligns with the select location and I would like some guidance on which Location of this community forum I can post this question to might I be asking this question in the wrong place.

Also , I am not yet done with the application process and would love if an experienced member / organizer of a user group could help review my application before sending since I am very passionate about Databricks and the responsibility I am applying to and I want it to work out.

I am looking forward to hearing from someone and get some assistance in the process.

Cheers .

Maxwel Ayal Asher.

Hi Maxwel,

First of all, this is awesome to see! Starting a Databricks User Group, especially the first in your country, is a big step, and the fact that you're being thoughtful about it already puts you ahead.

Let me share a bit based on what I’ve seen from similar community initiatives:

1. After applying, the Databricks community team will typically reach out to understand your motivation, your background, and how you plan to grow the group. Think of it less as a strict process and more as alignment, they want to make sure the group will be active and sustainable.

2. You don’t need to have a large member base upfront. What matters more is showing that you have a clear plan to attract and engage people over time.

3. Timelines can vary. It really depends on the community team’s bandwidth and the maturity of your proposal, but it’s not unusual for it to take a few weeks.

4. Yes, and this is actually a great idea. Starting informal meetups (especially online) shows initiative and helps you validate interest. It can even strengthen your application.

5. A co-organizer is not always mandatory, but it’s highly recommended. Having someone to share responsibilities with makes the group more resilient and increases your chances of long-term success.

On where to post, you’re in a reasonable place, but you might also get more visibility in community-focused sections or by tagging existing user group organizers if possible.

Also, happy to take a quick look at your application if you want a second opinion before submitting.

You’re definitely on the right track here, push foward!

Okay . Thanks for taking your time answering my questions and offering to help in my application . can we set and date and time so that we can set up a google meet and go over the application . I can ask you some more questions and you can hand me a few tips / comments if you might be having any.

You can contact me via my email maxwelayal9563@gmail.com   . I was thinking we can have it over this weekend if you are not going to be very engaged,

Thanks for offering to help out.
